Find the right IRS fax number

The IRS does not have one fax number. Each form goes to a specific unit, and several forms split by the state of your address — the same form can have two, three or eight different numbers. Pick the form below and we show the one the IRS publishes for your case.

Every number here is taken from the current IRS form instructions or Where-to-File page, with a link to that source next to it. Sending to the wrong unit is the most common reason a faxed form is never processed.

Questions

There isn't a single one. The IRS routes each form to a different unit, and forms such as 2553, 2848, 8821, 3911 and 4506-T split further by the state of your address. Use the finder above to get the number published for your specific form and state.

It depends entirely on what the document is. There is no general-purpose IRS fax line that accepts any document — each unit only processes the forms assigned to it, and anything else sent there is discarded. If you are replying to an IRS notice, use the fax number printed on that notice.

Most are — every 855, 877 and 844 number is toll-free. Three are not: 304-707-9471 (Form SS-4 from abroad), 304-707-9785 (CAF unit from abroad) and 304-707-9792 (Form 8802 from abroad). Those are flagged below.

No. Forms 1040, 1120, 1065 and other returns cannot be faxed — they must be e-filed or mailed. Faxing is available only for the specific forms and notice replies the IRS designates, which are the ones listed here.

Every entry links to the IRS page it came from, and the whole table carries the date we last verified it against those sources. IRS numbers change without notice, so check the linked source before you send anything time-critical.
